Devontè Bandoo got his first taste of British basketball on Sunday evening. Coming off the bench to help the Leicester Riders beat the Manchester Giants 114-107, and subsequently move onto the next round of the BBL Trophy. The Canadian guard had 5pts, 1ast and 3reb in a productive 10 minutes for the Riders.
Joining from the Saskatchewan Rattlers, Bandoo was averaging 16pts, 4.6 reb and 2ast in the CEBL. While averaging 43.2% from behind the three point line. Devontè, who’s known for his speed in transition, defensive awareness and the elite ability to catch and shoot also attended Baylor University, shooting just under 40% from three for the Bears during his time at the school.
His magic from behind the three point line didn't just stop there, Devontè went on to play a season for both the Lakeland Magic and Grand Rapids Gold after college who both compete in the G-League. Averaging 53.8% from free for the Magic and 46% for the Gold.
The Riders currently sit at the top of the BBL with the best three point percentage, but sit in 5th of three pointers made in the league. With the addition of Devontè, that can only help Rob Paternostro side as they come into quite possibly the busiest part of the season for the side with the playoffs rapidly approaching and a Cup final at the end of the month.
Joining the Riders in the busiest period of the season, your win Sunday takes you into the next round of the Trophy. The Cup final at the end of the month and currently in a fight at the top for the BBL, are you excited for the challenge and the potential to walk away with silverware in your first season with the club?
I’m excited to be in the uk. I’m still trying to adapt to the time zone. It’s always great to have a chance to win some silverware. Definitely excited for the challenge and to shock a lot of people.
I know you haven’t been in the UK too long, but how have you settled in with the team and the city of Leictester?
I’m still getting familiar with the city and haven't really got a chance to explore the city yet.
For the people who didn't get a chance to see you play in college for Baylor, the G-League or the CEBL. What can the BBL and Leicester fans expect?
